Even Start Graduation 2010
Sporting their cap and gowns, twenty preschoolers marched for their first graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 3rd, 2010.
The proud parents of the four-and-five-year-old preschool graduates also participated in our year-long Family Literacy Program, called Even Start. The ceremony marked the fulfillment of a promise made by the parents to attend 16 hours of classes each week while their children were in preschool. These classes included parenting workshops, interactive literacy activities, adult education and early childhood education. The excellent attendance records of the families, which in fact far exceed the state requirements, attested to the importance these families place on education.
ACLAMO Family Centers has offered Family Literacy for the past 10 of its 34-year history. In addition to offering an array of essential social services to members of the Latino community, ACLAMO Family Centers has made a commitment to bring Family Literacy to Norristown. The success of those students who are readied for kindergarten through ACLAMO’s Family Literacy Program has been independently documented. The parents’ success is marked by an increase in job readiness skills and English proficiency that enables them to more fully engage and assimilate as productive members of the local community.
